The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
