Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during his trip to the US capital that the Russian president's move to request talks with Donald Trump signals Moscow is feeling pressure. He remarked, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to restart dialogue immediately after it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks addressed earlier comments about providing advanced missiles to Ukraine.

Political Developments and Global Responses

An ex- US state department official, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is attempting to disrupt the progress toward increased pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the likelihood of achieving a truce by pushing Moscow to get serious appear to have decreased."

The development came after Trump had recently been strengthening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's conversation with the Russian president, which the Kremlin characterized as "extremely frank and constructive."

European Fuel Sanctions and Economic Effects

EU authorities have set a requirement for energy suppliers into the European Union to demonstrate their fuels are not sourced from Russian oil, as stated in a document published on recently. This step is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on imports of refined products made from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest sanctions package against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Financial analysts noted that trading patterns appeared to be considering the potential reduction of India's purchases of Russian oil. Some oil processors in India are preparing to reduce purchases from Russia, with expectations of a gradual decrease, according to insiders familiar with the situation.

"This represents a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would remove a big customer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were steady on Thursday.

Military Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Russian drone and rocket attack targeted gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, causing outages in eight regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russia deployed numerous of drones and dozens of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russians use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that strikes affected the areas of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Diplomatic Responses

Ukraine's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Russia demonstrated its true approach to peace through the "violence" of these attacks. "Russia once again chose weapons over dialogue, turning this assault into a clear setback to current diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stated that the EU had no choice but to build up anti-drone defences against Russia. She revealed a "plan" to get ready for potential conflict by the end of the decade, featuring a novel anti-drone system to be completely functional by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to begin working in its first phase by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the following year. Brussels aims to obtain the support of member state representatives at a meeting in the coming days.
