Young Australian Charged for Supposedly Attaching Sticker Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture

A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after reportedly defacing a large blue sculpture of a mythical creature by applying googly eyes to it.

Amelia Vanderhorst, aged 19, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on Tuesday, facing with a single charge of damaging property.

Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that surveillance video showed a individual placing artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the court she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the judge advising her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in December.

The following day the reported event, the local mayor said that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the stickers could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the council would seek the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

At the time the artwork was initially suggested, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at A$136,000 (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
