Instead, it has become a privilege that those in power grant or deny as they see fit. This constitutes the implication of proposed measures that the ruling administration is advancing, which would determine the timing and location demonstrations can occur, with potential prison sentences for those who defy these restrictions. Gradual Weakening of Democratic Rights Previous governments had already weakened this essential right: the former Conservative government had granted law enforcement extensive additional powers, which international human rights organizations had condemned as "significant and undue restrictions" on democratic freedoms. Collectively, these progressive attacks on freedom have practically eliminated the hard-won right to public demonstration. Using Tragedy to Justify Crackdown The most recent restrictive measures are being justified by referring to last week's heinous antisemitic assault on a Manchester mosque. There should be widespread consensus that the security of Jewish communities in Britain must be safeguarded. However, employing this horrific incident as a pretext to suppress dissent is not only disconnected to that duty but distorts it. "When you can't draw the line at mass killing, you likely cannot establish limits at democratic principles," commented a prominent American author, whose words that rings true for the present administration. Historical Perspective of Protest Consider Britain's long tradition of public demonstration and activism against racial discrimination and fascism, from the historic 1936 Cable Street confrontation to postwar Jewish anti-fascist movements and the 1970s mobilizations against the National Front. Many of these historical demonstrators were branded as extremists in their era, even while they were fighting for the freedoms of marginalized groups. Current Reality In the current complicated landscape, here's what's truly occurring: The Israeli government – a foreign state – is perpetrating acts that international bodies have described as genocide. Its warfare have prompted the global justice body to issue legal indictments against Israel's prime minister and his former defense minister. Western popular sentiment has changed significantly against Israel's violent actions. In Britain, a large percentage of the public believe Israel has likely committed international law violations. Most people would endorse a complete ban on weapons exports to the nation, and approve the detention of Netanyahu. Silencing Dissent Having essentially failed the public debate, pro-Israel advocates are now seizing on a vile anti-Jewish attack to try to suppress a popular campaign against a ethical disaster. The British government seems included in this attempt. Government officials have failed to implement comprehensive sanctions on Israel and have allowed weapon shipments to continue. People who are protesting against the erasure of Gaza have been labeled as hateful extremists. Yet there's a significant reason why there hasn't been a more extensive suppression on these demonstrators until now: extremely few protesters have made genuinely hateful statements about Jewish people, giving police authorities minimal reason to take action. Problematic Association Merging Jewish identity with the policies of the government of Israel is not only manipulative but also harmful. The standard interpretation of anti-Jewish prejudice, accepted by the British government and numerous institutions, has been appropriately questioned for potentially stifling valid commentary of Israel. However, there should be universal agreement about one of its key examples: that "holding Jewish people generally accountable for actions of the state of Israel" constitutes antisemitism. Increasing Limitations This is why we've reached a point where law enforcement can suggest that demonstrations opposing Israel's actions should be called off because they might "inadvertently or deliberately" endorse antisemitism. Similarly, government officials have declared that recognition of Palestinian statehood has made political parties "implicated" in supposed mistreatment experienced by Jewish communities. Inconsistent Treatment On the very day as the religious center assault, the Israeli military killed dozens of Palestinians in Gaza – adding to the horrific toll from two years of daily atrocities that have claimed tens of thousands of human lives. British politicians and media outlets have barely concealed the limited value they attach to Palestinian life. This represents one of the boldest expressions of racism in our time. Crossing Thresholds Our government has already passed a dangerous threshold by proscribing a specific activist group, a peaceful, human rights-focused direct action organization. Multiple thousands of British demonstrators have been arrested, mostly for holding placards against genocide and supporting the proscribed group. Many of those arrested are elderly citizens; among them a former clergyman and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. International Parallels It's not difficult to see where this path leads. In the United States, government officials helped demonize pro-Palestinian protests: a former House Speaker implied that some were "connected to" foreign governments, while the current president described such demonstrations as anti-Jewish. In taking these actions, they helped legitimize the repressive measures on such protests – and on free speech in general. Future Concerns If a hard-right government comes to power, it would be granted sweeping powers to suppress opposition. What might a new administration do with this repressive toolkit? Our ancestors fought, endured hardship and died to secure our freedoms. We may eventually rue how easily we allowed them to be eroded.
