Virginia's New Governor Establishes History as First Female Governor

Over 250 years, Virginia has seen 74 state executives, each one of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's records.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency operative succeeded with a election strategy that highlighted everyday expenses and carefully opposed Donald Trump's policies rather than the individual.

Background and Academic Journey

Born in Red Bank, New Jersey on a summer day in 1979, she relocated to a Virginia community at age 13. Her father was an military serviceman who later worked in police work; her mom was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She enrolled in the University of Virginia, obtaining a degree in literary arts. After graduating, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before turning to a government work.

“I grew up knowing that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she informed followers at a event in coastal Virginia recently.

Government Roles

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she handled involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She executed court mandates, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and specialized in national security, working covertly and abroad.

Family Decision

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, considered their future. Residing on the west coast, they were contemplating another overseas assignment. They took out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in kindergarten, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we opted to transition from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Political Beginnings

Back in her home state, she participated in Moms Demand Action, which works against gun violence, and started a youth group. In that period, she resolved to run for Congress, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because no Democrat had won the congressional seat in decades.

“But I witnessed what the president was implementing with his actions and how he was dividing communities. And I noticed my member of Congress repeatedly work against the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to take action. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Moderate Stance

In Washington, she quickly became part of the moderate Democrats, a collection of moderate and fiscally moderate Democrats. She focused on lower-profile issues: expanding internet access to rural areas, fighting narcotics trade and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for working with opposing parties and was often cited as the most cooperative member of the state's congressmembers. She was vocal about political rhetoric that she believed turned off centrists, warning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in contested districts.

Centrist Group

Along with Congresswomen Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was dubbed a part of the “pragmatic group” in contrast to the progressive “group” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In November 2023, she announced she would step down for a another term and would instead run for governor in the next election.

Her platform highlighted themes of public service, support for education and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a calling rather than a career.

Win Over Opponent

This enabled her to counter rival candidate Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on cultural issues, including the assertion that she is an radical on individual freedoms and transgender healthcare.

The governor-elect, who consistently argued that individual districts should decide whether transgender students can compete in competitive sports, portrayed her rival as the contender more out of step with the center of the state's voters.
