This well-known US pharmacy retailer Rite Aid has declared the closing of its final locations.

On Saturday, the company's online portal was updated with a announcement confirming: "Every Rite Aid stores have now closed. We appreciate our dedicated customers for their long-standing of support." The site also provided a option for customers to request their pharmacy files.

Founded in 1962, the firm was once one of the largest pharmacy retailers in the country. In its heyday, Rite Aid counted approximately 5,000 locations.

But in recent years, the chain faced monetary difficulties and a Justice Department probe. Recent data showed fewer than 100 locations were still open.

Rite Aid had filed for bankruptcy in late 2023 and then in May 2025.

The firm also faced lawsuits over its involvement in the prescription painkiller epidemic. In 2022, Rite Aid agreed to pay as much as $30 million to settle legal claims alleging it fueled the flow of opioids in the US.

The following year, in its 2023 bankruptcy submission, the firm said that restructuring would help it "settle litigation claims."

Rite Aid also faced a Justice Department lawsuit in which officials alleged the company's locations filled unlawful prescriptions for oxycodone and fentanyl. The firm agreed to settle in July 2024.

Additional US drugstore retailers have likewise been closing outlets throughout the country, though different factors have been cited.

Since 2021, CVS has closed over 1,000 locations as part of a broader move.

In a similar vein, Walgreens, which was not long ago acquired by investment group Sycamore Partners, shut down 500 stores in the last twelve months.

Industry observers have raised concerns about expanding "pharmacy deserts" in the United States, where millions of residents reside lacking a pharmacy close by and must commute to get prescriptions dispensed.
