Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy States Preparedness for Conflict-Time Polls In Response to Criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated he is ready to conduct a national election during the current war, provided that Ukraine's parliament and international allies approve. This statement comes after allegations from the U.S. President that he was clinging to power.

Clearly frustrated by the intervention from overseas, Zelenskyy stressed that "This is a matter for the people of Ukraine, and not for individuals from other nations, with all appropriate respect to our friends."

However, he promised to explore avenues for scheduling a vote in the coming months. "Given that this question is brought up by the leader of the United States, our ally, I will reply briefly: look, I am ready for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday evening.

"Furthermore, I am requesting ... the United States to help me, perhaps in conjunction with European partners, to ensure protection for the polls, and then within the next 60 to 90 days Ukraine will be prepared to hold the elections. I personally have the determination and willingness for this," he continued.

The U.S. President's Comments and Ukrainian Constitutional Situation

These remarks were voiced by Trump in a lengthy interview released by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "Ukraine haven't had an election in a while," stated the American leader. "You know, they speak of a democratic nation, but it becomes a situation where it's not a democracy any more."

Zelenskyy's mandate officially ended in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law bans elections in a time of martial law. Even, his critics have often said that safety and political considerations make it impossible holding an election amid the ongoing conflict.

"Holding a vote would only cause harm," stated Serhiy Rakhmanin. "Zelenskyy is the supreme military commander, and the country is in a position where we lack that option, whatever disagreements we might have with him. It would only aid the adversary," he continued.

Practical and Constitutional Hurdles

Zelenskyy highlighted two primary problems that require solutions: the practical challenge of allowing soldiers, millions of displaced people, and those in occupied territories to participate, and secondly, how to legally hold elections when a state of war is active.

He sought counsel from allies on safeguarding the elections, and from MPs on how to amend the law to enable a election. "{I am waiting for proposals from partners, I am awaiting suggestions from our MPs, and I am ready to participate in the elections," said Zelenskyy.

Broader Diplomatic Background

Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after concluding a diplomatic tour to various European capitals. This occurs while the White House has reportedly been applying pressure on Kyiv to accept a settlement.

Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed at a conference that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to fears of losing power. He also indicated that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the conflict continues. "{It's not correct. But it's not precisely wrong," responded Trump, when asked about his son's allegation.

It has been suggested that the U.S. has suggested Ukraine should relinquish the Donbas region to achieve peace, a concession that would be deeply unpopular within Ukraine. Additionally, there is as of now no evidence that Russia is prepared to sign any agreement, even one that might seem favorable to Moscow.
