Plans for Trump-Putin Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Announced

There are "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Hungary's capital soon to discuss the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was not "required".

The White House did not share additional specifics on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had pushed him to give up extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump supported a ceasefire proposal backed by Kyiv and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he remarked.

Russia has frequently resisted against freezing the present battle positions.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Moscow's terminology for a set of extensive requirements that include the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the disarmament of Ukraine – a impossible condition for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated discussions about the front line were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unplanned conversation with Trump recently came ahead of reports that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The talk about the weapons systems had proven to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
