The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the championship lead from his teammate by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver during the running before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points behind Norris, ended up in 17th position as his team ran a unique setup. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to have an incident, though minor, when he spun at the fourth corner during the early running. The Japanese slid over the track edges before sliding over the gravel trap, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the barrier. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the practice, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn before the final corner on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, trailing team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
