Jim Gavin exited the Irish presidential election less than three weeks before polling day

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has announced he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three vying for the role of Irish president, beside Independent TD Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys.

Yet, on Sunday evening he stated through a declaration he had "made a mistake inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Taking all these considerations on board, I have decided to exit the election for president right away and go back to my family," he declared in a statement.

Further updates expected.
