Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
