Individual Taken into Custody In the Wake of No Fewer Than 50 Bullets Fired from Sydney Home

A male suspect aged 60 is now in police custody in the aftermath of a shooting that injured at least one person, multiple individuals harmed and several automobiles targeted by gunfire by a gunman within the inner western suburbs of Sydney.

As many as 100 rounds were fired over a two hour window from 7:45 PM to 9:30 PM Sunday evening in Croydon Park.

Police Launch Large-Scale Response

Roads were shut down and the area was placed in lockdown following the start of a significant police operation following accounts a man was indiscriminately firing at motorists, even targeting police vehicles, travelling along Georges River Road.

Specialist police teams were deployed to detain the male suspect aged 60 from a unit above a business adjacent to the bustling roadway.

Authorities Offer Information

Superintendent Stephen Parry in an acting capacity told reporters late Sunday it was unclear about the precise count of bullets let off “but there could have been somewhere from 50 to 100 rounds that were fired”.

He mentioned numerous vehicles and premises were hit by bullets and incurred damage over the course of the occurrence, however, a fuller account could be obtained during daylight hours.

Parry stated the location was brought under control “fairly quickly” and praised the officers involved.

“They exhibited remarkable valor through their actions,” he informed the media in a late-night press conference.
“They faced rapid fire gun shots on a number of occasions and ought to be praised for their actions.”

He did not have confirmation if police discharged their firearms as well throughout the confrontation.

Police Commissioner Recounts Alarming Situation

Commissioner Mal Lanyon of NSW Police stated body-worn cameras from police revealed how near police were to getting shot while they sought shelter during the “serious and terrifying incident”.

“You can hear a multitude of firearm discharges, along with definite impacts, in close proximity to the camera,” Lanyon informed 2GB radio in Sydney on Monday morning.

One of the officers shot at was a recent academy graduate for five weeks, Lanyon said.

The motivation for the gunfire remains under investigation though Lanyon stated no association was found to acts of terrorism or organized crime.

Harm and Consequences

Emergency medical personnel attended to 16 people at the location suffering from minor wounds.

  • A number sustained injuries due to flying glass fragments as their windows were hit by the bullets.
  • Some received treatment for shock.

A group of persons were transported to the hospital following care from ambulance crews.

A taxi driver aged in his fifties was in a serious but stable condition with wounds to his neck and head.

Exceptional Occurrence for Sydney

It came down to chance that more people weren’t hurt, Trent King, the acting assistant commissioner said.

“Such an event is rare for Sydney to have something like this, with such a large number of shots fired,” he stated to the ABC radio station on Monday morning.
“We’re very fortunate that further destruction was avoided and undoubtedly more injuries or even deaths.”

King stated it would have been terrifying for the community and the police who responded.

“What I can say is the responding police came under gunfire. Law enforcement automobiles incurred harm and it is very fortunate that all police emerged unharmed.”

Alleged Shooter in Police Custody

The male suspect aged 60 was under police custody within a Bankstown medical facility and was due to be interrogated and formally accused on Monday.

Firearms, including a high-calibre rifle, were confiscated at the time of his arrest, police alleged.

Witness Testimony

One eyewitness to the shooting reported to the ABC he was traveling nearby and “detected multiple banging sounds along the left side of the taxi”.

“Subsequently, I glanced beside me, and I noticed several holes in the window on the passenger side,” he said.
“I was unaware that the roof had a hole too. I detected the scent of gunpowder, however, I presumed because it was [NRL] grand final night, it might be someone setting off firecrackers or similar.”
