Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially fatal collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The dangerous situation took place on the third lap when track officials were seen on the track as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Clearly there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just run across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a caution signal was shown in that area"

"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
