Exceptional Scarlet Electrical Discharge Recorded in the Atmosphere

A group of image specialists in New Zealand have recorded images of red lightning, one of the most elusive celestial events in the world, during which glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the sky.

An Unforgettable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists began their evening to photograph the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.

They thought they would be fortunate to get clear skies that night, but their expedition transformed into “a night to remember,” an individual involved stated.

“He was checking his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and discovered he had photographed red sprites,” he noted. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of screaming and shouting and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Understanding Red Sprites

Red sprites are bursts of electrical energy in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by storm systems. In contrast to traditional lightning that strikes downward to the earth, the phenomena propel upward towards the upper atmosphere, forming shapes that resemble pillars, root vegetables or even jellyfish. The first photograph of a such an event was captured – by chance – in the late eighties, by a group at the a academic organization.

Fleeting and Otherworldly Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are rarely visible to the naked eye, but a team member got lucky. “I was coincidentally viewing straight toward one when it took place – an ideal happenstance viewing the right part of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.

Observing the events was a aspiration for the photographer, an award-winning dark sky artist. “It looks like you’re seeing an unreal vision, it appears mystical … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is fascinating to witness.”

Technical and Innovative Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon demands a mastery of specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about science and artistic vision, he said. “This is a highly complex form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member said it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I could see the Milky Way shining above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light danced above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he explained.

A One-of-a-Kind Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no other images capturing red sprites and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.

“This was a singular occasion when you know you’re witnessing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
