England's Assistant Coach Shares The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Anthony Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager win the World Cup in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he was hooked. He discovered his destiny.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a standing for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the top as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Focus on Minutiae

Obsession, especially with the smallest details, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. Barry emphasizes “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus many of our days on. It’s our job not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We have 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from concept to details to know-how to performance.

“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, it's crucial to employ the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the versatility, the strength, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, attacking high up. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger for development knows no bounds. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out the most challenging environments imaginable to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license as the best in his year, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – got into print. Lampard included impressed and he hired Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea was Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry stayed on in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London and back alongside him. The Football Association see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
