Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unneeded offerings could be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The diverse haul could include items such as a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

The items reportedly locked away in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away for years.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Gifts

  • A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.

  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with garnering support from international counterparts and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
